AT&T Backs EV Transit Connect
Wednesday, March 10th, 2010
Azure Dynamics Corporation has announced that AT&T has agreed to purchase two of the first Ford Transit Connect Electric vans, the latest addition to AT&T’s growing fleet of alternative-fuel vehicles.
The Ford Transit Connect Electric, which goes on sale later this year, has a range of up to 80 miles on a single charge and will be rechargeable using either 240-volt or standard 120-volt outlets. It has a top speed of 75 miles per hour.
“Cleaner, alternative-fuel vehicles are the future of our corporate fleet, and the Transit Connect Electric represents a real breakthrough and will be a strong addition to our range of alternative-fuel vehicles,” said Jerome Webber, vice president of fleet operations at AT&T. AT&T currently operates more than 77,000 vehicles in its corporate fleet, including 15 gasoline-powered Ford Transit Connect vehicles AT&T began piloting in 2009.
By combining car-like driving dynamics with truck-like cargo capacity, Ford Transit Connect Electric is well suited to the demands placed on urban delivery vehicles for small businesses and larger, corporate fleets.

AT&T Adds 1,000th Alternative-Fuel Fleet Vehicle
Thursday, February 25th, 2010
AT&T announced the deployment of its 1,000th alternative-fuel vehicle in its corporate fleet. The deployment is part of a $565 million planned investment announced in March 2009 to replace more than 15,000 fleet vehicles with more fuel-efficient models through 2018. AT&T currently operates a fleet of more than 77,000 vehicles.
The 10-year initiative includes an expected $350 million to purchase approximately 8,000 compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles over a five-year period, including the 1,000th alternative-fuel vehicle, a CNG van deployed in Oakland, California. This represents the largest initiative to CNG to date by a U.S. company. AT&T anticipates spending another $215 million through 2018 to replace 7,100 fleet passenger cars with alternative fuel models. According to the Center for Automotive Research (CAR), AT&T’s overall alternative fuel vehicle initiative will:
-Save 49 million gallons of gasoline over the 10-year deployment period
-Reduce carbon emissions by 211,000 metric tons
“In a time of deep economic uncertainty, AT&T is making investments in our corporate fleet that are good for our business, the environment and our economy,” said Jerome Webber, vice president, AT&T Fleet Operations. “The deployment of our 1,000th alternative-fuel vehicle signals a demand for cleaner alternative fuels that are less volatile in cost and that can be tapped here in America, right now.” CAR estimates that the AT&T fleet initiative will create or save – on average – approximately 1,000 jobs per year over the first five years of the initiative.

AT&T Rewarded for CNG Program
Monday, October 12th, 2009
AT&T was recently recognized for its concentrated effort to encourage the use of natural gas in its fleet vehicles and educating the public on the benefits of alternative fuels. The telecommunications giant was one of five recipients of the National NGV Achievement Award at the Natural Gas Vehicle Conference-Summit in Long Beach, California.
After conducting a thorough investigation of natural gas vehicle options, benefits and availability, AT&T decided in 2008 to field test 25 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)-powered installation-and-service vans in several of its California locations. After deploying the units and evaluating their performance, AT&T announced in early 2009 that it would replace approximately 8,000 gasoline-powered service vehicles with vehicles powered by CNG over the next five years. The company plans to deploy 15,000 alternative fuel vehicles by 2019. BAF Technologies also announced June 30 it would help AT&T with the conversion to compressed natural gas. The Center for Automotive Research (CAR) estimates AT&T’s CNG vehicles will save 49 million gallons of gasoline and reduce carbon emissions by 25 percent over its 10-year implication. Ranked No.1 on Automotive Fleet’s Top 300 Commercial Fleets of 2009 based on size, AT&T operates 86,099 vehicles in its fleet.

New Study Shows Massive Impact of “Going Green” with Fleets
Wednesday, October 7th, 2009
A new report by the Sustainable Transportation and Communities group at the Center for Automotive Research (CAR), a Michigan-based nonprofit research group, has examined the benefits of converting business fleets from gasoline to alternative-fuel vehicles such as compressed natural gas and gas-electric hybrids.
The main idea that the report supports is that turning corporate and other business vehicle fleets “green” provides the opportunity to put large numbers of more environmentally friendly vehicles onto the roads at once. The results of doing so would be both environmentally and economically positive.
Replacing 15,000 current gas-powered fleet vehicles with gas-powered and hybrid vehicles over a 10 year period could reduce gasoline consumption by more than 49 million gallons and cut carbon dioxide emissions by 211,000 metric tons in that period. Those reductions would be the same as simply removing 38,000 gasoline powered vehicles from the road for an entire year.
The CAR study used AT&T’s vehicle replacement program as a case study for their report. The AT&T program will also help to support an average of 1,000 vehicle manufacturing jobs each year until 2013.
“This example of corporate leadership, if followed by a significant portion of other public and private fleets, could have a huge impact on the release of greenhouse gases and significantly reduce the dependence on foreign oil,” said Kim Hill, director of the Sustainable Transportation and Communities group at CAR and the study’s lead. “For example, the emissions equal to 600,000 vehicles and the consumption of 15 million barrels of oil could be eliminated if 25% of the fleets had similar programs. In addition, demand for these types of advanced technology vehicles by the nation’s fleets could spur a growth in domestic green jobs.”
If the country is serious about increasing the number of fuel-efficient vehicles on the road in the near future, the fleets of America represent the best opportunity in the shortest timeframe, Hill said.

One of the largest fleets in country is re-educating its drivers
September 30th begins the first ever Distracted Driving Summit in Washington, D.C. Among the organizations participating is telecommunications giant AT&T.
In addition to a new campaign that will educate the public on the very real danger posed by texting behind the wheel, AT&T is also “in the process of revising its wireless and motor vehicle policies to expressly prohibit texting while driving,” the company announced in a recent statement.
AT&T has one of the largest commercial fleets in the country, and is adding a section on the consequences of texting while driving to the defensive driving classes given to employees who drive as part of their job. All employees are required to review company policy periodically and take refresher courses on defensive driving, so the changes in policy will be easily spread throughout the company.
AT&T said it will continue to work with CTIA – The Wireless Association, The National Safety Council, and other third parties to support their efforts to educate the public about the dangers of texting while driving.
