AT&T Adds 1,000th Alternative-Fuel Fleet Vehicle
Thursday, February 25th, 2010
AT&T announced the deployment of its 1,000th alternative-fuel vehicle in its corporate fleet. The deployment is part of a $565 million planned investment announced in March 2009 to replace more than 15,000 fleet vehicles with more fuel-efficient models through 2018. AT&T currently operates a fleet of more than 77,000 vehicles.
The 10-year initiative includes an expected $350 million to purchase approximately 8,000 compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles over a five-year period, including the 1,000th alternative-fuel vehicle, a CNG van deployed in Oakland, California. This represents the largest initiative to CNG to date by a U.S. company. AT&T anticipates spending another $215 million through 2018 to replace 7,100 fleet passenger cars with alternative fuel models. According to the Center for Automotive Research (CAR), AT&T’s overall alternative fuel vehicle initiative will:
-Save 49 million gallons of gasoline over the 10-year deployment period
-Reduce carbon emissions by 211,000 metric tons
“In a time of deep economic uncertainty, AT&T is making investments in our corporate fleet that are good for our business, the environment and our economy,” said Jerome Webber, vice president, AT&T Fleet Operations. “The deployment of our 1,000th alternative-fuel vehicle signals a demand for cleaner alternative fuels that are less volatile in cost and that can be tapped here in America, right now.” CAR estimates that the AT&T fleet initiative will create or save – on average – approximately 1,000 jobs per year over the first five years of the initiative.

Utah House Passes CNG Conversion Bill
Thursday, February 11th, 2010
The Utah House of Representatives passed a bill on Feb. 5th aimed at making it easier and cheaper to convert vehicles to run on compressed natural gas.
Representatives voted 67-1 for HB70, which would allow industry-certified technicians to convert cars and would require safety and emissions checks every three years or 36,000 miles, the Salt Lake Tribune reported. The bill now moves to the Utah Senate.
The proposed rules seek to transfer natural-gas conversion regulation away from the federal EPA and into Utah state control. The bill’s sponsor is Rep. Jack Draxler (R-North Logan), who has argued that current federal regulations are too burdensome. EPA officials do not oppose the state legislation, Draxler said.
State control of regulating natural-gas conversions will mean cheaper options for Utah residents and a cleaner environment, Draxler told the Salt Lake Tribune. “Every tool available to us needs to be used when it comes to our air quality and when it comes to less reliance on foreign oil,” he said.
This bill marks the latest move in government policies to lower the American consumer’s environmental impact and lower the country’s dependency on foreign oil and unsustainable energy. The fleet world is a major player in the American automotive industry, so make sure your fleet does what it can to help the environment.

Thursday, May 21st, 2009

MSNBC.com posted an interactive feature to go along with the article concerning President Obama’s plans to require all vehicles average 30mpg by 2016.
The “Carbon Calculator” found here: allows you to calculate how much carbon dioxide you’re fleet is responsible for during it’s daily commute.
The map-based calculator will give you an estimate on the impact your fleet is having on the environment.
