Lost Art of CB Lingo: X, Y, Z

cb-picThis is it.  We’ve reached the end of the road.  Come to the last stop on the alphabet highway.  By now you should have a real handle of the CB lingo and hopefully you’ve enjoyed the ride along the way.

So, without further adieu here’s your final language lesson featuring the letters X-Y-Z:

X

XYL – The wife of a CB’er

YL – Young lady, Miss

Y

Youngville – Young children using the channel

You got it – Letting another station know he has the “floor”.

You gone? – Are you still there?

Your telephone is ringing – Someone is calling for you.

Z

Z’s – Sleep

Lost Art of C-B Lingo: S – T

cbradio_4309It’s that time of the week to pop in a Willie Nelson 8-track and roll through the next set of letters in our CB dictionary. By now, fleet managers from sea to shining sea should be able to talk the talk when they’re putting the pedal to the medal, but we can’t stop until we get to the end of the road, so without further adieu here’s you lingo for the through weeks featuring the letters S-T:

S

Sailboat fuel – Running on empty

Salt mines – Place of employment

Scrub brush – Street cleaning truck

Shot an eyeball on it – Saw it

Shovelling coal – Accelerating

Show-off lane – Passing lane

Skates – Tires

Smile and comb your hair – Radar trap up ahead

Smokey Bear – State Police

Smokey with a camera – Cop with radar

Someone spilled honey on the road – State troopers ahead everywhere

Stop to get groceries – Stop and eat

Straight Shot – Road is clear of police and other obstructions

Sunbeam – A CB’er who livens the channel with witticisms

T

Tearjerker – A CB’er who always cries the blues

Tooled-up – A souped up rig

Trading Stamps – Money

Turkey – Dumb

Turn Twenty – Location of exit or turn

Two miles of ditches for every mile of road – Drive safely, keep in the middle

Nail it down – Pinpoint or recollect

Nap Trap – Place to sleep

Negative – No

Negative Copy – Didn’t hear

Negatory – No

Neon, Freon, Ion Jockey – Truck driver with many lights on his rig

Nightcrawlers – Many police in the area

Ninety Weight – Liquor

Nodding off – Getting tired

Nobody knows where the teddy bear goes – State troopers criss-crossing the freeway

Numbers – Best wishes. “3’s and 8’s”

O

Oil burner – Diesel truck

On the by – Listening, not talking

On the side – Standing by, available for a call, listening on frequency. O.M. (old man) – A CB’er

On a [insert city name] Turn – i.e.- “I’m on an Alamo turn” (I’ll make my return from San Antonio).

One foot on the floor, one hanging out the door, and she just won’t do no more – Full speed.

Open Season – Cops are everywhere

Out – Through transmitting

Outdoor TV – Drive-in movie

Over – Your turn to transmit

Over and out – Closing the transmission

Lady Bear – Female police officer

Lame – Broken down vehicle

Land Yacht – Mobile home or camper

Lane Lover – Someone who won’t budge out of a particular lane

Latrine Lips – One who has a dirty mouth

Lettuce – money

Line – Freight line company

Log some Z’s – Get some sleep

Loot Limo – Armored Car

M

Machine – Same as “Rig”

Mad Money – Expense account

Magic Mile – The last mile of any trip

Make it a best seller – Have a good trip

Mama – Girlfriend or wife

Man in Slicker – Fireman

Marker – Milepost on highway

Mayday – Distress call

Meatwagon – Ambulance

Mess-em-up – Accident

Mobile Eyeball – Checking out another truck while passing it

Mobile – Forrest Logging truck

Ice Box – Refrigerated trailer.

In a short – Real soon

In the mud – Noise or other signals on the channel

In the Pokey with Smokey – Arrested

Invitations -Traffic citations, tickets

J

Jack – CB term for brother or friend

Jack Rabbit – Police of any kind

Jewelry – Lights on a rig

John Law – Cop

Juke Joint – Small, inexpensive eating or drinking place

K

Keep ‘em Between the Ditches – Have a safe trip

Keep the bugs off your glass and the trouble off your… – CB Sign-off

Keep your eyes and ears open and your black stack smokin’ – Be alert and make good time

Keep your noise between the ditches and smokey out of your britches – Drive carefully, lookout for speedtraps

Keep your rubber down and your metal up – Drive carefully and have a good trip

This week’s CB lingo lesson covers the letter’s G & H, which means we’re getting close to the alphabetical equivalent of the heartland of America.  The drivers in your fleet are sure to have noticed  a difference in your trucker talking ability by now.

Gas Jockey – Gas station attendant

Get horizontal – Lie down to sleep

Get Trucking – Make some distance.

Girlie Bear – Female cop

Go Ahead – Answer back.

Go Juice – Truck fuel

Got a copy? – Can you hear me?

Go to 100 – Restroom stop.

Green Stamp Collector – Police with radar

Ground Clouds – Fog

Guitar Town – Nashville

H

Hack – Taxi

Haircut palace – Bridge or overpass with low clearance

Hammer Down – Accelerate

Hay Shaker – Trailer transporting a mobile home

Highball – Go nonstop to your destination at a rapid pace.

High Rise – A large bridge or overpass.

Hip Pocket – Glove box.

Hot Lanta – Atlanta, Georgia

How tall are you? – How tall is your truck?

Hundred mile coffee – Strong coffee

Lost Art of CB Lingo: E-F

cbradio_4309We were going to try to take the weekend off, but the demand for more CB lingo was too much. The requests coming were so fast and furious we had to tell everybody to keep their flaps down and give us a little time to pull together our favorite lingo from starting with the letters E-F. So, grab a forty weight and enjoy.

Starting with E-F, here are some of our favorites:

E

Ears- Receiver / Radio

Eastbound -Vehicle moving in the eastern direction

Eighty-eight’s around the house – Good luck and best wishes to you and yours

Eyeball’s -Headlights

Everybody must be walking the dog- All channels are busy.

Evil Knievel -Motorcycle cop

F

Fake brake- Driver with his foot on the brake

Fat load- Overweight truck load

Feed The Bears -Paying a speeding fine or ticket

Flaps down -Slow down

Flop box -Motel, or room in truck stop

Forty weight -Coffee (sometimes Beer)

Forty fours – Childern; kisses

Full of vitamins – Running full bore

The Lost Art of CB Radio: Part 2

cbradio_4309Well our 1st blog on CB lingo was so popular there was a line waiting to get on our site from here to Cactus Patch (Phoenix, AZ). So, we thought we keep things rolling down Alphabet road and choose our favorites from C-D:

C

Cash Register -Toll booth

Chew ‘n choke -Restaurant

Checking My Eyelinds For Pin Holes -Tired or sleepy.

Check the seatcovers -Look at that passenger (usually a woman)

Chicken Coup- Weigh station

Christmas Card- Speeding ticket

Coffee Bean- Waiter or waitress

Colorado Kool Aid -Beer

Convoy- 2 or more vehicles traveling the same route.

D

Dead Pedal- Slow moving car or truck

Dice City- Las Vegas

Diesel Juice -Fuel oil

Dixie Cup- Female operator with southern accent

Doing the Five-Five- Traveling at 55mph

Don’t Feed The Bears- Don’t get any tickets

Double Nickel -55mph

Down and on the side -Through talking but listening.

Dream Weaver- Sleepy driver who is all over the road.

Dressed for the ball -You have your “Ears ON”, listening to the road conditions

Man, that was intense. I’m checking my eyelids for pinholes. I need a Colorado Kool-Aid and two tickets to Dice City after that. Check back next week when we make our pull off at the metaphorical exit ramp better known as E-F and G.

Series: The Lost Art of CB Lingo

Note from the Editor: This is the first in a 13-part series on the Lost Art of CB Lingo. Each Friday, we’ll cover two new letters in the alphabet and their corresponding terms. Check back each Friday for new updates. 10-4!

cb_radio_32708In this day of two-way radios, cell phones and global tracking system systems, we are in danger of losing a true American treasure – CB lingo. Over the next few weeks, check in on our dictionary of terms and phrases that will either have the drivers in your fleet admire your ability to “brush your teeth and comb your hair” (radar trap ahead), or they’ll just think you’ve gone crazy. Starting with A-B, here are some of our favorites:

A

ACE – Important CB’er

AF – Audio Frequency

All the good numbers -Best wishes.

Alligator-Tread from the tire of an 18 wheeler on the road

Alligator Station -All mouth and no ears. A person who likes to talk just to hear himself.

Amigo -Friend

Ankle biter- Small child or annoying teenager

Antler Alley -Deer crossing

B

Baby Bear- Cop in training, or rookie

Back off the hammer -Slow down

Bean House Bull -Trucker talk exchanged at truck stops, eyeball-to-eyeball

Bear Bait -Speeding car

Bearmobile- Police car

Breaker-Breaker -Same as break. Also the title of Chuck Norris’s first mainstream movie.

Bring it back -Answer back

Bring yourself on it- Request to move into the right lane

Brown paper bag -Unmarked Police car

Bubble gum machine- Flashing lights on top of car

Bucket Mouth- Loudmouth, or someone who uses a lot of profanity.

Bucket of bolts -Eighteen wheeler
